Alliance to Save Energy
What is the Alliance to Save Energy?
The Alliance to Save Energy is a nonprofit coalition of prominent business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders who promote the efficient and clean use of energy worldwide to benefit consumers, the environment, the economy, and national security.
Alliance Headquarters
Practicing what it preaches, the Alliance established a new energy-efficient headquarters in July 1996 in the heart of the nation's capital that showcases the latest lighting and other advanced technologies. Signs on the office walls explain the energy-efficient technologies. The Alliance's headquarters is 50 percent more efficient than the typical office suite. Tours are available.
Alliance Programs and Funding
For 25 years, the Alliance has worked to make the benefits of energy efficiency understood and practiced in the United States and around the world. Its education, research, and advocacy programs are concentrated in the buildings, policy, international, and communications arenas. All programs emphasize that energy efficiency is the world's most critical energy resource.
A strength of the Alliance is the ability to create partnerships and to bring various constituencies and parties together to advance the overall goal of moving the United States and the world toward a more energy-efficient, sustainable future. The Alliance has worked with industry groups, utilities, financial institutions, government entities, individuals, corporations, foundations, and communities. Funding comes from corporate contributions and grants from foundations and government agencies.
Its staff of more than 60, based in both the U.S and several other countries, brings a wealth of experience from the private and public sectors to the Alliance and its energy efficiency issues. The Alliance has activities in countries on five continents.
Alliance to Save Energy's Green Schools Program
The Green Schools Program combines conservation and education in a way that strengthens schools, involves students in making a real difference, encourages teamwork, and fosters community involvement. The program helps schools use energy efficiently through changes in the behavior of building users and changes in operations and maintenance routines. Green Schools also encourages schools to install retrofits and renewable technology, and bring the energy efficiency message home and into the community. Working at the school district level with 5-15 schools per district at one time, the efforts of the Green Schools Program helps turn energy savings into financial savings, of which a percentage goes back to the individual schools that achieved the savings. These savings not only enable the Green Schools Program to continue in the district, but also help the schools bring in new resources like library books, computers, or buses for field trips.
