School Building Week's School of the Future student design competition offers an opportunity to illustrate the kind of creativity that students bring to the design process. The annual competition, open to middle school students, challenges student teams to redesign their schools to enhance learning, conserve resources, be environmentally responsive and engage the surrounding community.

In a few short weeks, student teams from across the country will meet in our nation's capitol to compete for the School of the Future Award of Excellence. Challenged to plan and design healthy, high performance, safe and sustainable school buildings that enhance student performance and community vitality, these students are representative of the passion and motivation all children have to help improve their learning experience.

The multi-disciplinary solution requires students to follow a planning process and design an educational facility from the concept phase to completion of the project, with thorough documentation. Each team is required to submit a project model, a 3 to 5-minute video or PowerPoint presentation and a 750-word narrative description documenting the planning process and rationale, all while following a project-based learning curriculum developed to address the national math standards for middle school students.

Dedicated architecture students, architects, engineers, realtors, construction managers and school planners contribute their time in mentoring middle school students through the competition so that the accompanying curriculum comprehension and learning about the design and built environment can take place.

The national jury will take place at the American Federation of Teachers building on April 30. The students will be honored at a Breakfast on Capitol Hill with their respective members of Congress and will be feted at an evening reception hosted by the National Association of REALTORS®. The week's events culminate in the Awards Ceremony, May 2 at the National Building Museum, where Michelle Rhee, chancellor, DC Public School will address the gathering. The winning schools will receive cash prizes donated by the National Association of REALTORS®
