Creating Places to Learn
Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. has long served as an advocate for improving the quality of our nation's school facilities, working in conjunction with such organizations as the Council for Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the U.S. Department of Education. The firm has published extensive research addressing the impact of facilities on the quality of education, including three acclaimed books on school design: Community Use Of Schools: Facility Design Perspectives, Making A World Of Difference: Elementary Schools, and Shaping The Future: Middle Schools. A new book on high schools is currently underway and will document such landmark projects as Medina High School in Ohio, where the school district and community have launched one of the most far-reaching facility-based partnerships ever achieved in the U.S.

The firm has provided planning and design services to public and private school clients for over 40 years, earning numerous awards from the American Association of School Administrators; the National School Board Association; CEFPI; AIA; and other professional organizations. In 2001-2002, Fanning/Howey earned the "Triple Crown" in design achievements nationally, winning the Shirley Cooper Award for its design of Deerfield Elementary School in Novi, Michigan; the Crow Island School Citation for Fort Recovery Elementary/Middle School in Fort Recovery, Ohio; and the William W. Caudill Citation for Chesterton High School in Chesterton, Indiana.

Fanning/Howey Associates is the nation's top-ranked firm in educational facilities planning and design. Nationally, the 350-person firm has completed over 900 schools within the last five years, representing over $5.8 billion in construction volume. Work spans the U.S. – from Alaska to the Florida Keys – as well as overseas.

Several of the firm's projects have been showcased in National Education Association programs calling for better school facilities nationwide; in a satellite town meeting on school design and construction hosted by former U.S. Department of Education Secretary Richard W. Riley; and in the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary, Children In America's Schools, hosted by Bill Moyers. Fanning/Howey was also selected by the Department of Education and the AIA to participate as a host sponsor in Ohio for National School Modernization Day. Fanning/Howey Chairman, Ronald H. Fanning, AIA, PE, REFP, speaks nationally on such topics as school construction issues, community use of schools, sustainability and environmentally friendly design, and the impact of facilities on learning. Mr. Fanning is the president-elect of CEFPI.
