National Education Association / Health Information Network
Making the Connection between Excellence in Education and Health
Healthy students. Healthy education employees. Healthy learning environments.
The mission of the NEA Health Information Network is to improve health, safety and student achievement by providing school employees with vital, effective and timely health information through parent, community, public and private partnerships.
NEA HIN is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, which provides health information, programs, and materials to 2.7 million educational employees and the more than 40 million students they serve. We develop training and technical assistance materials that help employees and students practice healthy behaviors, make healthy decisions, and advocate for adequate health protections in the workplace. These materials are disseminated to school districts nationwide through NEA's impressive organizational structure of 53 state and territorial affiliates and 13,500 local education associations.
NEA HIN's programs are tackling some of today's most critical public health issues including HIV/AIDS Prevention, Pregnancy Prevention, Parent Education, Early Detection of Breast and Cervical Cancer, Underage Tobacco Use, Mental Wellness, and Indoor Air Quality.
Indoor Air Quality in Schools
Ensuring that our schools are free from environmental hazards is a major health concern of all education employees. HIN's provides school employees with a number of services and resources designed to improve the indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools, including the information and skills needed to take action at the local level. One effective resource is EPA's IAQ Tools for Schools Program. Members nationwide are trained and educated on using this effective, comprehensive program, which provides inexpensive and effective methods for solving air quality problems in schools.
HIN recognizes the connection between school facilities and student achievement and is proud to
co-sponsor School Building Week! We hope to spread the word to our state and local affiliates and increase awareness as to the importance of safe, clean, healthy environments and the positive effect they have on teaching and learning.
